The short version

Nothing is stored on your device until you choose. When you first arrive, analytics are switched off. If you accept them, Google Analytics sets two cookies so we can count visits and see which pages people read. If you reject them, nothing is set beyond the one cookie that remembers you said no.

We do not use advertising cookies, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell or share what analytics tells us.

What a cookie is

A small text file a website asks your browser to keep. Some are needed for a site to work at all. Others, like analytics, are optional, and the law says we have to ask before setting them.

Cookies we set

Strictly necessary

gz_consent — records the choice you made about analytics so you are not asked again on every page. Set by this site. Lasts six months, after which we ask again. This one cannot be turned off, because without it we have no way to remember that you said no.

Analytics — only if you accept

_ga — tells one visitor apart from another, so a return visit is not counted as a new person. Set by Google Analytics. Lasts up to two years.

_ga_<property> — keeps track of the current visit, so several pages read in one sitting count as one visit rather than several. Set by Google Analytics. Lasts up to two years.

How consent is handled

This site uses Google Consent Mode. Before you choose, Google Analytics is told explicitly that it may not use storage for analytics or advertising, so it writes no cookies and reads none. If you accept, that instruction is updated and the two cookies above are set. If you reject, the instruction stands and nothing further is stored.

Changing your mind

Use the Cookie settings button at the top of this page, or the same one in the footer of any page. Your choice takes effect immediately. Turning analytics off stops any further collection; to remove cookies already set, clear them in your browser settings.

Blocking cookies in your browser

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies, and doing so will not stop this site working — nothing here depends on them beyond remembering your choice. The ICO guide to cookies explains how, and what your rights are.
